The nominations for the 18th Annual OFTA Television Awards have been announced.
Best Movie/Miniseries nominee American Horror Story: Coven topped this year’s nominations tallies with 19. This is the series’ second year in the limited series categories, two years ago, it competed in the regular series category where it was second-most nominated behind Mad Men.
Two programs tied for second-most nominated program of the year with Game of Thrones topping all other series with eighteen nominations, and motion picture made for television The Normal Heart receiving the same number. Three programs came in third with 14 nominations apiece, Fargo, Mad Men and Sherlock: His Last Vow. The year’s top-nominated comedy was Modern Family with twelve nominations beating out Orange Is the New Black by one.
Including its fourteen nominations this year, Mad Men becomes the most nominated series in history with 112 nominations to date. With the first half of its seventh season, Mad Men has scored double-digit nominations each year of eligibility, a rare feat. This breaks the tie for second place it held with ER last year and surpasses, by three, the series total of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Mad Men and Game of Thrones are joined in the Best Drama series category by The Americans (3 nominations), Bates Motel (5 nominations), Breaking Bad (13 nominations), House of Cards (10 nomination), and The Walking Dead (7 nominations).
In the Best Comedy Series category, Modern Family and Orange Is the New Black are accompanied by The Big Bang Theory (8 nominations), Louie (4 nominations), Psych (1 nomination), Shameless (8 nominations), and Veep (7 nominations).
The motion picture and miniseries categories were split this year. In the motion picture category, The Normal Heart and Sherlock: His Last Vow will compete against The Challenger Disaster (1 nomination), Psych: The Musical (7 nominations), and The Trip to Bountiful (2 nominations).
For Best Miniseries, American Horror Story: Coven and Fargo will face competition from Dancing on the Edge (5 nominations), The Hollow Crown (6 nominations), and The White Queen (1 nomination).
The winners will be announced on Sunday, August 24, 2014.
